SAN FRANCISCO PREMIERE: MacFrugal’s Bargains Close-Outs opened its first store in San Francisco on Saturday.
The 15,000-square-foot store, at 3333 Mission St., stocks more than 30,000 items, including apparel and cosmetics, at 40 to 70 percent off regular retail prices, the Dominguez, Calif.-based company said.
Unlike other discount and department stores, MacFrugal’s buys primarily manufacturer overruns, discontinued items, packing changes and other close-out items. Each store in the 277-store chain receives a merchandise shipment every week.
A DEMAND FOR DOLLAR: Strong Christmas sales and robust demand helped Dollar General Corp. boost same-store sales 9.7 percent in December. The discounter’s total sales jumped 26.1 percent to $252.2 million from $200 million.
Cal Turner Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of the Nashville, Tenn.-based company, said the strong sales reflect good merchandise values and a high level of consumer service.
“The biggest challenge was fulfilling our customers’ demand that actually exceeded the capacity of our two distribution centers,” Turner said.
The retailer plans to open a new distribution center in Ardmore, Okla., next month, which is expected to improve its distribution capacity.
