It was a rough holiday period for Katoucha Niane, the model and would-be designer, now awaiting trial on drug charges in her native Senegal.
A former favorite of Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Lacroix, Katoucha was picked up in a raid on a Dakar house on Dec. 21. Detectives seized 200 grams of heroin and cocaine in the raid.
Katoucha was released from custody on Jan. 6, her attorney, Para Diokhane, said in a telephone call from Dakar. He confirmed that she had been charged with heroin trafficking but said no date had been set for a trial.
Diokhane said that Katoucha had been arrested in a car several hundred yards from the house that was raided, and was carrying no drugs herself. He conceded that some drug paraphernalia was found in the car but insisted that it did not belong to Katoucha.
The daughter of Senegalese writer Djibril Tamsir Niane, Katoucha was in the news in France in the fall, when Russian Serge Majarow, then her boyfriend, was gunned down outside his 16th arrondissement apartment.
Last October she unveiled Katoucha, her own ready-to-wear collection in Paris with her friends Naomi Campbell and Carla Bruni on the runway.
Oscar de la Renta is in Paris to work on his Balmain collection and the city’s hostesses are making sure his off hours are occupied. On Friday, Helene David-Weill gave a dinner in his honor in her Left Bank hotel particulier.
“It’s just an intimate dinner,” said the designer, adding that this week “Pam is having a few friends over.” Pam is Pamela Harriman, the U.S. ambassador who is hosting a dinner in his honor.
