MAIN STREET USA: GTE Main Street, an interactive television service that is a subsidiary of GTE Corp., is one of the few systems that claims to be fully commercial.
That’s because the service is available as a premium cable channel right now, in Boston and San Diego. Through an agreement with Continental Cable, Main Street could reach 500,000 additional potential customers.
Main Street offers financial services, entertainment, games and home shopping among its 70 options. Its home shopping offering is CUC Shopper’s Advantage, a shopping club, which consists of text and photos of 250,000 products.
GTE plans to introduce apparel in full-motion video, so viewers can see a fashion show and interact with it, zooming in on details such as shoes or hats.
GTE Main Street is also talking to retailers and manufacturers about participating in home shopping.

INFOMERCIAL TEASER: An infomercial for Merle Norman Cosmetics sells absolutely no products, yet is considered a success. The infomercial, produced by DeFalco West Advertising and Info-Media Productions, was designed to attract customers to Merle Norman Makeup Studios.
Hosted by Erin Gray, the infomercial offers viewers a free hydrating facial and free makeover with any product purchase. In addition, with a $7.50 purchase, a customer receives a cosmetic bag and Luxiva Cellular Therapy Emulsion, an alpha hydroxy acid-based product.
The infomercial runs on local stations in cities where Merle Norman studios are located.
