MCCURDY’S STARTS SHUTDOWN SALES
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — McCurdy & Co. Inc., a 93-year-old family-owned department store chain here, is beginning going-out-of-business sales at its 12 stores, beginning.
As noted, May Department Stores Co., which already operates four Kaufmann stores in the metropolitan area, has agreed to purchase eight McCurdy’s and convert three of them into Kaufmann units.
The other five will be sold, May said.
Fox Promotions, a Cranford, N.J.-based liquidator, will run the sales.
McCurdy’s, which operated four of the stores under the B. Forman name, had been hurt by a general economic downturn in western New York, as well as by stepped-up competition from discounters.
