LEAVES KMART: David M. Carlson resigned as senior vice president of corporate information systems at Kmart Corp. Carlson, who joined the discounter in 1985 as vice president of electronic merchandise systems, will be a special projects consultant to Kmart.
Marvin P. Rich, executive vice president of strategic planning, finance and administration for special projects, will oversee Kmart’s information systems organization on an interim basis.
POCONO PROTOTYPE: Ames Department Stores opened its first store since 1989 last week, in Mount Pocono, Pa. The 72,465-square-foot store — about 21 percent larger than a typical 60,000-square-foot Ames unit — is a possible prototype of new stores, the company said.
There are some layout changes. Aisles in the main apparel area are angled so shoppers walk toward a dramatic display area. In-store signs have been updated with new graphics and colors.
Ames, which had annual sales of $2.2 billion last year, is the fifth-largest discount chain in the U.S.
