Lauren Bush’s boyfriend, Lucas Somoza, made a bigger splash than he could have hoped for at the Stages Repertory Theatre benefit in Houston on Friday. Somoza was the first of three guests to fall accidentally into the indoor pool at hostess Becca Cason Thrash’s glass and granite mansion. (At the request of the performers, the pool was left unlit to match the floor.)
“I kept thinking, ‘Damn these heavy Prada shoes,”‘ said another victim. “I thought I was going to drown — drowning by Prada!”
Each splash was followed by a blur of black tie, as the tuxedoed servants whisked wet guests away for a change into their hosts’ clothes. The evening, pegged “A Celebration of American Fashion,” lured Lynn Wyatt, Diane Von Furstenberg, Anna Wintour, Carmen Marc Valvo, Mark Badgley and James Mischka. Thrash made three clothing changes herself, from Marc Bouwer to Jean Paul Gaultier and, finally, red La Perla pajamas. Alas, one planned outfit was not to be.
“The woman who fell into the pool took the Yves Saint Laurent,” she sighed. “Life is tough.”
Back in New York, the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House was honored with a pair of parties — one for the grownups at Valentino and another for their kids at Dylan’s Candy Bar. And on Monday night, a red sea of serious ballgowns flooded the Casa Italiana on 117th Street for the New York City Opera’s annual Thrift Shop benefit. The clothes were a hit: Ghislaine Maxwell found a pink velvet Dolce & Gabbana coat, Marina Rust walked out with a Zandra Rhodes and Karen Elson scored a little red Alaia. But Bettina Zilkha left empty-handed.
“Vintage isn’t for me,” she said with a laugh. “Somebody may have died in that shirt.”
