FACE THE MUSIC
Byline: Antonia Sardone
NEW YORK — Musicians as fashion icons — the concept has been around for years. Whether it’s Courtney Love’s grunge look from the early Nineties, Madonna’s brief Goth moment a few years ago or Jennifer Lopez and her penchant for sexy Seventies outfits, music and fashion have always been cozy companions. But who influences whom? Is it the music of the artists that inspires the designers, or is an artist’s style driven by fashion? Although some designers do pay tribute to the women in music who’ve influenced them — think Dolce & Gabbana’s Material Girl collection or Heatherette’s Liza Minnelli tops — in the end, the unity between music and fashion is all about give and take.
