OBJECTS OF DESIRE

Fall’s fashion girl is a chameleon. One day, she’s a “Belle de Jour” dressed in leather and lace, and the next, a global princess covered in embroidery and furs. But whatever her mood, she’s perfectly accessorized, since Paris and Milan designers turned out a highly appealing group of must-haves this season. From wickedly sexy high heels to fur-trimmed moccasins, oversized handbags to glittering jewels, accessories were front and center for fall.
Shoes in particular were in the spotlight, with a wide selection of high heels, from lace-up sandal styles to sexy pumps that hit outrageous heights. Retro looks, including Mary Janes and platform sandals, were also important. These were often spiced up with wild colors, exotic skins, pom-pom details or studding. Boots also continued to take center stage, in variations ranging from sultry to eccentric. There were mink-trimmed rain boots, patchwork snakeskin designs, suede boots with turquoise details and even playful green and blue spats.
Meanwhile, there was plenty of experimentation with handbag sizes and shapes. Oversized messenger and carry-on styles, in distressed leather, embroidered fabrics or furs, made a dramatic statement. More feminine pieces turned up, too — small pastel silk handbags with chain handles, extra-long satin evening clutches, luxurious crocodile bags and velvet numbers with sterling silver handles.
Jewelry added stylish touches to glammed-up looks. Designers showed chokers reminiscent of Indian table-cut diamond necklaces, romantic chandelier earrings, gold chains and watches a la rap star, bold cuffs and long tassel necklaces.
For that critical final touch, there were fabulous hats, such as dashing fedoras, skullcaps, baseball caps and even Peruvian knit numbers with attached centurion-style Mohawks.
