NEW YORK — Custo Barcelona, the 22-year-old contemporary sportswear brand known for its bold prints, is planning to open its first store in the U.S. on May 15.
The store is set in the heart of Chicago’s Gold Coast at 750 North Rush Street. At 800 square feet, it will serve as a test for future retail ventures in the U.S. Designed by Tat Magner, the Chicago location will mimic the company’s first flagship in Barcelona, which opened in May 2001. The brand already has a presence in the U.S., selling at Henri Bendel, Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, so Custo Dalmau, the company’s co-founder, said the brand is ready to support a signature boutique.
“I think it is very important to have our own establishment in order to keep business alive for the brand,” Dalmau said. “Right now, we sell to multibrand stores that do not carry the entire collection. This will be our chance to show the customer the whole brand.”
Dalmau said two other Custo Barcelona boutiques are in the works to open this fall. While they are still negotiating locations, one is being plotted for New York and another for Los Angeles.
“I would love to have stores in Boston and Miami, among other places,” he said. “But that will come in time.”
Custo Barcelona will operate 20 stores throughout Europe and seven in Taiwan before the end of June and an opening in Tokyo is planned before the end of the year, he said.
