HBA NEWS BRIEFS
SWISS IN THE CITY: La Prairie, the Swiss skin care company best known for caviar-laden skin care products and high-end spas, is unveiling its first U.S. spa next month with the reopening of the Ritz-Carlton located at 50 Central Park South. The 3,000-square-foot space, located on the second floor of the well-known hotel chain, will emphasize de-aging and de-stressing, as well as offer customized treatments for women crunched for time. The spa will also serve as a retail space for La Prairie products. Luxury will play a prominent role, too, with services such as warmed towels, Frette robes and heated tables. The debut is expected sometime during the first two weeks of May; construction delays pushed back an initial April 29 opening.
GOING WEST: Peter Coppola is not only looking to open a new salon in Beverly Hills, he’s planning to turn salon retailing on its head. The new West Coast salon, slated to open in the fall, will measure approximately 5,000 square feet and will dedicate half of its square footage to a retail area, complete with makeup artists. “Imagine a Sephora with a high-end salon connected to it,” Coppola said. Coppola’s salons in Manhattan, Boca Raton, Fla., and Westport, Conn., currently dedicate very little space to products, save for Coppola’s own line, Soyagen. The new salon will serve as a prototype for a 25-unit chain Coppola plans to build over the next two years. “The whole industry is getting into retail, it’s not only about service anymore. We have 300 women walking into our salons each day and we are not capitalizing on that.” Both upscale hair care and cosmetics brands will be offered, such as products by Kiehl’s, Bobbi Brown and Trish McEvoy.
DANILO BUZZING: Hairstylist Danilo has left his gig at the John Frieda salon where he styled celebrity clients, and now can be found at Bumble and bumble. His main interest in his alliance with the buzzing hair group is to “collaborate with this groundbreaking salon, inspire and achieve,” Danilo said, and eventually do some training. Bumble and bumble has developed a private room at their 146 East 56th Street location to accommodate Danilo and his star clientele, which includes Drew Barrymore, Cate Blanchett and Gwen Stefani. Perhaps Danilo will also play a role in the resurgence of the MAC hair care line, a venture rumored in the industry.
