NEW YORK — There’s a lot to be said for Americana, especially when it’s delivered with a dash of cool. Tommy Hilfiger and his designing sister Ginny take that approach in upbeat clothes with just enough edge to make a good girl feel hip. And it worked like a charm in the fall collection the pair showed in a small presentation in their showroom, after passing on the traditional show week in February.
They kept the shapes clean, lean and a little racy, a hint of Courreges in a wool felt dress here, a not-really-grungy mini kilt there. There were plenty of faded denim skirts and jeans, lots of chunky knits and a pair of cool leather pants with braided details. And of course, those signature Tommy red, white and blue plaids turned up, this time on a wool boucle coat and mini. The whole thing had a slick but cozy feeling, especially since the Hilfigers worked a layering angle with little extras like a fur vest and plenty of great coats and jackets, from a slim-fitting felt princess shape and crisp white trench to carefree, cold-weather parkas.
