WELLA BUYS YARDLEY UNIT
DARMSTADT, Germany — Cosmopolitan Cosmetics, the cosmetics and fragrance arm of Wella AG, has acquired the brand rights and the business operations of American Yardley of London (U.S.) LLC for the U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico and Canada.
American Yardley of London (U.S.) LLC is headquartered in Memphis, Tenn., and is owned by investment partnerships controlled by the New York merchant banking firm, Wasserstein & Co., LP. Financial details of the acquisition were not released.
Cosmopolitan, based in Cologne, Germany, handles the brand in more than 100 countries, having acquired the Yardley rights for a big part of the world in 1998.
In an announcement made here Monday, Wella’s chief executive officer, Heiner Gurtler, said, “By acquiring the Yardley brand rights for the U.S.A., we can consolidate our position in the luxury toiletries segment and on the world’s key cosmetics market.”
Cosmopolitan Cosmetics includes brands, such as Yardley and 4711, in the luxury toiletries segment. In the prestige fragrance market, the company’s key brands include Gucci-Parfums, Rochas and Alfred Dunhill, and in the bridge segment, Mexx, Marc O’Polo, Naomi Campbell and Gabriela Sabatini.
