SAPIENZA LEAVES KMART
NEW YORK — Lucinda (Cindy) Sapienza has left her position as vice president and general merchandise manager of women’s wear at Kmart.
Her final day at the company was Jan. 15. Sources said that she has not accepted a position at another company.
A spokeswoman for the retailer would not comment on the terms of the departure and would only say that a replacement would be named soon.
Sapienza, who could not be reached for comment, was named to her former position in the fall of 1999. She was in charge women’s apparel, fashion accessories, hosiery, lingerie and jewelry. She reported to Cecil Kearse, executive vice president of merchandising.
Sapienza joined Kmart in July 1997 as divisional vice president of women’s apparel after spending 19 years at J.C. Penney Co. in various merchandising positions, including vice president of brand development and divisional vice president of women’s apparel. She was hired by Kmart as part of a team charged with rebuilding an ailing fashion department. Her husband, Joe Sapienza, remains an executive with the firm in merchandising.
Kmart’s major private labels in women’s apparel include Route 66, Jaclyn Smith, Kathy Ireland and Sesame Street apparel.
