Grandma’s got a brand new Scaasi — seven brand new Scaasis, actually, but who’s counting? When Barbara Bush came to New York last week to see “Contact” on Broadway, she stopped by the salon of Arnold Scaasi for a final fitting of the seven outfits Scaasi designed for her to wear during the inaugural festivities in Washington. “I’m superstitious,” she told the designer several months back. “I can’t order anything until all the votes are in.” When George W. got the nod, she went in for two long gowns — one in Barbara-Bush blue (just a bit brighter than royal) and one in slinky black — a coral coat and a blue coat with matching dresses and a red coat dress with brass buttons (shades of Nancy Reagan?). And Bush made sure that none of her new outfits conflicted with Laura Bush’s inaugural clothing. “It’s a much slimmer look for Barbara than before,” says Scaasi. “She’s in great shape. The black dress especially is a departure.” Even Babs’s famous pearls have changed: Not long ago, George Bush replaced her Kenneth Jay Lanes with the real thing.
