NEW YORK — Global Sports Inc. has agreed to develop and operate a new G.I. Joe’s online sporting goods store.
G.I. Joe’s has operated its own e-commerce site since May 1997, selling sporting goods, active and outdoor apparel, footwear, and automotive goods. The new dot-com store, under Global’s development, is set to launch in spring 2001.
Michael G. Rubin, Global’s chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement that the alliance with G.I. Joe’s represents a continuation of Global’s strategy to leverage the brick-and-mortar brand names, marketing power and in-store relationships of the country’s leading sporting goods retailers.
Norm Daniels, president and ceo of G.I. Joe’s, said the company made the decision to outsource its e-commerce business to enable G.I. Joe’s to “remain focused on our core retail business as we look to roll out new retail locations throughout the Pacific Northwest.” Established in 1952, G.I. Joe’s operates 17 retail sites throughout Oregon and Washington. The Wilsonville, Ore.-based retailer plans to open additional units in Sherwood, Ore. and Seattle.
Global Sports, based in King of Prussia, Pa., is a developer and operator of e-commerce sporting goods businesses. The company in 2000 launched the Ready Set Sports store at the iQVC site, an online retailing division of QVC Inc., and acquired the online sporting goods store Fogdog Inc.
