NEW YORK — What more could a woman want? Oscar de la Renta knows. When it comes to clothing, he’s the quintessential Ladies’ man, so it comes as no surprise when he says that his new accessories line was inspired by women. “I want to portray an image of femininity, style and elegance,” he says. The collection encompasses everything from sexy stilettos and bags with semiprecious stones to hand-embroidered floral boots.
De la Renta is focusing on both his longtime loyal customers and the up-and-coming ones. “Young women today are more assertive, have a sophisticated eye and are dressing in an adult manner,” he says. “They understand that a fabulous handbag or shoe can make all the difference.” With this is mind, de la Renta has designed what he calls the “football bag,” a sporty mix of Americana and classicism. Shaped like a football with a cutout handle, it comes in brown and black crocodile, and red, brown or mustard yellow leather. There’s also a smaller evening version in red and black silk with crystals. The collection includes suede bags with carved jade trimmings and classic totes in fall colors, too.
His shoes are equally sexy and feminine, from refined crocodile stilettos with Pilgrim buckles to Indian-inspired embroidered mules with pearls and colored stones. Knee-high boots are spiced up with floral embroidery and a crystal buckle. For evening, he’s showing ladylike sandals with jewelled flowers and bow motifs as well as delicate peacock-feathered T-straps and boots.
The collection will be available in stores in July. Retail prices range from $110 for leather belts to $350 to $925 for shoes and boots and $350 to $4,500 for bags.
