TSE HIRES RICHARD CHAI

NEW YORK — Tse, the cashmere sportswear company that hired Narciso Rodriguez, Victor Alfaro and Hussein Chalayan as guest designers early in their careers, is switching gears with its latest designer, having named Marc Jacobs alumnus Richard Chai as creative design director of all Tse brands.
Tse had hosted emerging designers at the helm of its directional Tse New York collection. But with Chalayan leaving in January after a three-year partnership, the firm has since decided to incorporate Tse New York into its core Tse cashmere sportswear label, since there was often overlap between the brands, said Joann Casa, executive vice president.
Chai, who most recently was a designer for Jacobs’s men’s and women’s sportswear for the past three years and previously worked for Donna Karan, will design the Tse labels, including the Tse men’s and women’s lines and the contemporary Tse Say division.
“There is so much potential for this company to grow,” said Chai. “Even though it is small, it is very well known. But it is also still quite mysterious within the industry. It’s very experimental and willing to give opportunity to new designers.”
Tse is also expanding its own retail presence, opening an 800-square-foot store next month on Greenwich Avenue in Greenwich, Conn.
