NEW YORK — Charles Chinni is headed for J.C. Penney Co. in a high-level merchant post, sources said Wednesday.
Chinni is best known for his career at Macy’s, where he spent 30 years and rose to president of home goods merchandising at Macy’s East. He also has experience beyond the home store, having served as executive vice president of merchandising at Kmart in the mid-Nineties. After leaving Kmart, he joined Stroud’s, a home goods chain, for a brief stint.
Since Allen Questrom joined Penney’s as chairman and chief executive last September, the company has been restructuring its business and rebuilding its ranks.
Several top jobs have been vacated and refilled, and sources say that several merchant positions are under review.
One key position that’s still vacant is president of merchandising for stores and catalog. It was last held by Marilee J. Cumming, who left last year, but Chinni reportedly will fill a different key executive role.
