PARIS — France’s number one perfumery chain, Marionnaud, has reported sales figures for 2000 of $625.6 million, up 98.7 percent over 1999. That figure includes sales at its recently acquired 106 doors in Switzerland and 35 in Italy which brought in $67.29 million and $14.93 million, respectively. At similar group structure and at constant exchange rates, sales for Marionnaud would have risen by 11.5 percent. Dollar figures are translated at current exchange rates.
In France, the chain’s 22 espaces, or large-format stores, posted sales of $105.5 million, up 6.1 percent year-on-year. Meanwhile, the company’s small-surface boutiques registered $244.2, up 14 percent. The group projected a sales figure of $812.7 million for 2001.
The ever-acquisitive group also announced that it has taken a majority stake in DSP, the owner of perfumeries franchise, Beaute Actuelle. DSP links 112 independent perfumeries across France under the franchise.
The remaining 85 Beaute Actuelle perfumeries will remain independent.
“The French perfumeries market is getting poorer,” said Marcel Frydman president of the group Wednesday, explaining the rational behind the stake in DSP. “There is decertification in parts of France, as independent stores either sell off, disappear or survive on a very low income.”
As well as buying into the franchise, Marionnaud snapped up 27 of the 112 Beaute Actuelle stores. The stores, present in cities such as Montelimar and Grenoble, represent an annual sales figure of $19.58 million, according to Marionnaud.
The group also acquired a further four independent boutiques in France, bringing Marionnaud’s total number of doors in that country to 467.
Expansion outside France is also on the horizon, according to Frydman. The group is awaiting official recognition of its takeover of the 50-door Austrian chain Impo. The chain controls 22 percent of the Austrian market and represents annual sales of $40.52 million.. As reported, the group is also in talks with a Spanish chain and is planning to increase its presence in Italy.
