NEW YORK — Andy Hilfiger is still in negotiations with Jennifer Lopez, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to close a deal with Britney Spears.
While sources said Hilfiger and Spears had been in talks, it appears Britney is not quite ready to make the leap into fashion.
“She’s not doing a clothing line. There is no deal, and there isn’t going to be,” said Lisa Kasteler, Spears’s publicist.
Contrary to a published report on Saturday in another newspaper, a deal with Lopez hasn’t been signed yet.
WWD broke the story Friday that both celebrities were negotiating with Hilfiger to do major apparel deals. Lopez is talking with Hilfiger about doing a J.Lo Jeans line and Spears was talking about a junior sportswear collection.
Meanwhile, sources said Monday that Lopez and Hilfiger are nearing a deal, but nothing’s been signed yet.
Paul Wilmot, who represents Lopez in the fashion arena, said Monday, “Jennifer Lopez has always been interested in fashion. In a short period of time, she has become a style icon. We hope to be able to make a deal in the very near future.”
Andy Hilfiger could not be reached Monday for comment.
As reported, Hilfiger plans to set up a new company, Music Entertainment Fashion Inc., to manufacture clothing lines for musicians. Both Lopez and Spears reportedly met with Hilfiger to develop their respective sportswear lines, often bringing their own favorite outfits. The lines would ultimately be put together by a stylist, said sources.
