After 15 years of dating, Dale Collins and Eve Mauldin knew that they were destined to be more than a great couple.
“For a long time, we thought that if we pooled our talents and resources, we could create a great business,” says Dale Collins, a stylist who worked for 15 years at Plano’s L’Image salon.
“With Eve’s retailing background and my salon experience, we felt like we could put together something really unique and interesting.”
The result is Luxe Salon and Design at Lakeside Market on Preston Road. The combination day spa, salon and specialty store is located just north of the bustling Preston corridor.
“We thought this location was perfect because Lakeside Market is a collection of truly individual owner/retailer businesses,” says Collins. “There are no large chain stores, and that makes it a great destination for people looking for something special.”
The space, which features 10 salon stations on one side and an array of bath, home, gift and accessories on the other, has been designed with one eye on function and another on style.
“We really wanted a look that is soft and contemporary and very sculptural,” says owner Eve Mauldin whose job path has included long stays at both Neiman Marcus and Translations, and an ongoing modeling career with Kim Dawson. Mauldin recently spent six months in Paris searching for merchandise to bring to the salon/store, which opened in September.
“The store and salon combination seemed like a natural progression to us because clients spend a lot of time in salons waiting for color to process and so on,” says Mauldin. “This way, they can shop while their hair is in foil instead of leafing through magazines.”
In between facials and bikini waxes, clients wander among jewelry display cases featuring lines such as Gianpaolo Nason’s Venetian blown-glass beads. They can walk home with unique hostess gifts such as Michael Aram’s whimsical napkin rings etched with “Eat, Drink and Be Merry” and Michael Wainwright’s hand-thrown pottery edged in platinum.
“We’ve found that our salon customers are very fashion-forward with their look and their personal style,” says Ms. Mauldin. “Because we know how they like to look, we can get a good idea of how they like to shop. They really like the idea that they can pick up a gift for a friend’s birthday while they are waiting for their color to process.”
Top bath product lines include Rene Guinot and We Live Like This and hair care products include Phytologie and Kusco Murphy.
It’s not surprising that the full-service salon is busy with customers, with cuts and color being the top requests. Facials and massages are quickly filling the appointment books. The salon does not offer nail service.
“We really understand the customer’s need to get in and out of the salon as quickly as possible,” says Collins.
Of course, clients are encouraged to stay and shop for as long as they’d like.
