NEW YORK — “I was hoping to meet Christy Turlington,” said makeup expert Pablo Manzoni, who put the room in a jovial mood as he announced her Sundari skin care as the winner in the beauty category at the Fourth Annual Fashion Group International Rising Star Awards on Monday.
While “something came up at the last minute” for Turlington, other members of the company said she had every intention of attending the lunch to accept her award. Testing the products was vital when making a decision for this category, Manzoni said, and he chose Sundari when he “had a very good complexion for weeks” after using it.
The line won the beauty Rising Star Award over Chantecaille Beaute, Heavy Duty and Tarte Cosmetics.
“I wasn’t so happy about trying the lipstick,” Manzoni quipped.
Continuing the tradition of recognizing young talent in the industry, other FGI Rising Star Award winners included an emotional Mark Kroeker in the women’s apparel category, picked over nominees Gabrielle Carlson, Shalini, Peter Som and Christina Perrin.
Second-time nominee Kirna Zabete took home the award for retail, Sandy Dalal won for men’s apparel, S. Russell Groves for home and interior design, Wendy Tabb for accessories and Robert Verdi won in the communications category.
Keynote speaker Emme, host of “E! Fashion Emergency,” addressed the audience with an inspirational speech on the importance of following a dream.
“It is so important to encourage new talent,” Emme said prior to the ceremony. “And that’s why these awards are so beneficial.”
