NEW YORK — Par Darj, manager of the U.S. operations of Hennes & Mauritz, disclosed Wednesday that he’s returning to Sweden in the summer to work for the chain there.
The news comes as H&M prepares to open a unit on lower Broadway between Prince and Spring Streets in SoHo on Friday. It’s the chain’s third store in Manhattan and number 12 in the U.S. H&M, based in Stockholm, started opening stores in the U.S. last year.
Darj said it was his decision to return to Sweden. He’s been living with his wife and two children in Connecticut. “Family has to come first. We’re ready to go home,” he said.
Darj has worked for H&M for 23 years, and was instrumental in establishing the company’s operations here. Before coming to the states, he helped launch the chain in Austria.
Darj said his successor has been selected, although he declined to identify the person apart from saying, “It will be another Swede.”
