NEW YORK — Fragrances Exclusive Inc. (FEI), a division of Chanel, said earlier this week that it will become the distributor for Annick Goutal Fragrances in the U.S., starting July 1. The Goutal fragrances are currently distributed by Adipar Ltd.
Connie Ruscio, president of FEI, said that the 18-scent Goutal lineup will complement the company’s existing stable of brands, which include Bulgari, Salvatore Ferragamo, Emanuel Ungaro and Frederic Fekkai.
“We were the distributors for the Tiffany fragrances until last July, when Tiffany decided to take their fragrances out of specialty store distribution,” said Ruscio. “That decision left an opening for us to take on another specialty store fragrance brand. We had the capacity and the sales force in place.”
Ruscio said she isn’t currently planning to increase distribution for the Goutal scents, which are in about 200 U.S. specialty stores. “We will if they want us to, but right now, our focus — and theirs — is on growing business in existing doors,” said Ruscio. According to industry sources, the line does about 70 percent of its business in the U.S. and that volume is estimated at about $7 million wholesale.
Rights to the Annick Goutal fragrances are retained by the Taittinger family, which acquired the company from Annick Goutal in 1988. Goutal, who founded the company in 1981, died in August of 1999 after a lengthy struggle with cancer.
The Goutal fragrances aren’t the only new ones in FEI’s stable, either. On Jan. 1, the group got the U.S. distribution rights to the Euroitalia fragrances, which include Dolce & Gabbana and Moschino. That distribution was handled previously by Parfums Limited.
