NEW YORK — Michael Modell, co-president of Modell’s Sporting Goods, died last Saturday from complications of Hodgkin’s disease. He was 48.
Modell and his brother, Mitchell, shared the presidency of the 88-store New York-based chain, which was founded in 1889 by their great-grandfather, Hungarian immigrant Morris Modell.
Michael was active in civic affairs, serving on the board of directors of the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Grand Central Partnership, National Retail Federation and Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
Modell’s passion for civic affairs and social issues extended beyond boardroom meetings and into the retailer’s stores.
As a sponsor of the Goodwill Games in New York in 1998, Modell spoke to WWD about the expanding role of women in sports. “The Goodwill Games just help to accentuate that women are taking a very active role in amateur and professional sports and help reinforce how women are becoming such an important part of the athletic community.”
Modell is survived by his wife, Abby, and their children Alex, Andrew and Ashley; his parents, Modell’s chairman William Modell and Shelby Modell; his brother and sister Leslie Modell.
