NEW YORK — Every time there’s a new First Lady, we do our ritual roundup of possible looks. And what better moment for stirring up the fantasies of designers, hairstylists and fashion pundits around the world than the dawn of a new administration? Everyone has his or her own vision of Laura Bush, from Emanuel Ungaro’s surprisingly restrained looks to Christian Lacroix’s zany suggestion for the inaugural coat.
Ungaro sees a “subtle glamour for America’s First Lady — elegant, simple and refined for day; sleek and sensual sophistication for night.” So, too, does Vera Wang, who believes that Bush’s look “should be equally about dignity and glamour.” And of course, because we would never forget that Bush is a true-blue Texan, there’s a romantic offering from Dallas’s own Susan Dell.
