NEW YORK — After looking at hundreds of guys — many of whom pranced around in their Skivvies at its offices — Calvin Klein Inc. has chosen a new underwear model.
The company has signed Travis (who only uses one name), the six-foot-tall, 19-year-old Australian with dark blond hair and blue-green eyes, represented by L.A. Models, to a year-long contract to appear in the underwear ads and promote the new Calvin Klein Body brand of men’s underwear and T-shirts through in-store appearances and other events.
Travis follows other well-known Calvin Klein Underwear models — Mark Wahlberg, formerly known as Marky Mark, Antonio Sabato and Michael Bergin.
“We were looking for a new type of guy this time,” said Sydney Bachman, senior vice president and global creative director of advertising and fashion for Klein. “Before, the guys were always physically perfect and were more athletic. Travis is slimmer and boyish. Today, it’s not about working out in the gym and having yourself so pumped up and muscular. It’s more about being athletic and slim.” Travis happens to be a surfer.
“You can’t choose a sexy guy from a picture. We flew people in from all over the world to see us,” added Bachman. She said when she met Travis, she found him “charming, funny and he doesn’t take himself too seriously.”
She added: “I think what’s great about this is he’s so natural. This is the way he looks in his underwear. The concept was to shoot him the way he is.”
Steven Klein photographed the ads that will appear October through December in the New York Times, International Herald Tribune, GQ, Details, Maxim, Men’s Health, Spin, The Source, Vanity Fair, Out, Genre, Empire, Interview, Jane and Cosmopolitan. In addition, images will go up on billboards at the corner of Houston and Broadway in SoHo and on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, as well as on kiosks in San Francisco.
