MAY CO. SETTLES LAWSUIT
NEW YORK — The May Department Stores Co. Tuesday confirmed it has settled a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of disabled shoppers by advocacy group Access Now. Details of the settlement could not be immediately learned, but a May spokeswoman said it would lead to a number of changes that make the company’s stores more accessible to the disabled. Access Now noted in a statement that these initiatives should include wider aisles, lowered cash wrap counters, reachable phones, and usable fitting rooms and restrooms.
The original lawsuit was filed against the company’s Lord & Taylor stores, and the number of May stores affected by the settlement was not immediately known, according to the spokeswoman. May currently operates 431 department stores and 135 David’s Bridal stores.
