TESCO NAMES HOERNER
LONDON — Tesco is already the U.K.’s largest food retailer, and now it wants a bigger slice of the apparel pie.
Tesco has hired American retail executive John Hoerner to give a boost to its clothing business. Hoerner, 60, has lived and worked in the U.K. for 14 years, first as chief executive officer of the department store chain Debenhams and then as ceo of its parent company, The Burton Group. He was ceo of the specialty fashion retailer Arcadia until last fall.
Tesco hired Hoerner earlier this year to serve as a consultant for its clothing business, but it has now decided to make his position a permanent one. As ceo of Tesco Clothing, Hoerner will report to Richard Brasher, director of nonfood products.
“Tesco has millions of customers in its stores every week,” Hoerner said in a statement. “They tell us they love having access to great clothes at great prices. So the chance to help develop ranges to meet this increasing demand is very exciting.”
