NEW YORK — While black has been dominating the outerwear department for years, the color of coats will cover a wider spectrum this season.
Brown, red and camel will be key colors for brands such as Pacific Trail Leather, Andrew Marc and Harve Benard.
“We want to set the pace in the market for brown,” said Frank Spadaro, executive vice president at Pacific Trail Leather. “There is so much black out there.”
At Harve Benard, president and chief designer Bernard Holtzman said that while he believes that black will sell, color will be bought early in the season.
Many makers believe that as coats have evolved from an investment item to become part of a women’s wardrobe, brands have encompassed a wide range of novelty and directional styling in their collections.
Longer coats are returning this year in a variety of categories, from wool and leather to active outerwear.
