Sorry to disappoint the conspiracy theorists, but there really wasn’t much intrigue to the Hillary-Laura non-encounter at the Met Monday night. Laura Bush, an inveterate early bird, had given advance notice to Costume Institute officials that she planned to arrive early and duck out before dinner. Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, hadn’t planned to come at all on account of a senatorial engagement on Long Island. But falling prey to fashion’s more persuasive folk, Clinton rushed back from the Island — cutting it so close, in fact, that she had to change in the car on the way over.
