NEW YORK — “John Galliano is one of the most influential designers in fashion today,” according to John B. Fairchild, former chairman and currently editor at large of WWD’s parent, Fairchild Publications. “Galliano has done some of the most beautiful collections I’ve ever seen — not that he needs any help from me!”
In an interview with Fairchild in WWD Ninety, a special retrospective edition, his comments on Galliano were mistakenly omitted due to a computer transmission error.
Responding to a question about today’s most influential designers and, specifically, who among the young designers have the potential for greatness, Fairchild said: “Saint Laurent today is still enormously influential, as are Armani and Lagerfeld at Chanel. And you’d have to say Ralph Lauren.
“As for others, I’d say Miuccia Prada, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Helmut Lang for his technique, Dolce & Gabbana and Martin Margiela. And Tom Ford is definitely influential. Among the younger ones, John Galliano is, and you’d have to say Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan are the ones who seem to be leading the pack.”
