NEW YORK — The Leslie Fay Cos. that it has signed a licensing agreement with Regent International to license better-priced knitwear under the company’s Outlander Sportswear label, which has been dormant for two years.
Leslie Fay plans to relaunch the collection at retail for spring 2001, with a more contemporary attitude, according to Bob Salem, director of marketing.
Knitwear outfits will not retail for more than $100, he said.
The company had shelved the 40-year-old Outlander label two years ago because it wanted to focus on rebuilding the Leslie Fay brand, Salem said.
In Outlander’s heyday in the early Nineties, it generated sales of about $50 million.
Salem said the short-term goal is to reach that volume over the next five years, but Leslie Fay envisions eventually building the brand into a several-hundred-million-dollar licensing business that would include shoes, handbags and other categories.
Regent International designs, manufactures and markets an extensive range of knitwear under the Jason Maxell brand as well as private labels in women’s and men’s sportswear.
