CARPET BRAGGERS

Red-lipped, bobbed and taking slow drags from her cigarette, Chloe Sevigny seemed to be summoning Jean Harlow’s ghost — via Faye Dunaway — as she slunk down the red carpet at Sunday night’s Screen Actor’s Guild awards in Hollywood.
Without all the pressure of the upcoming Oscars, the SAG awards give stars a chance to play around — and in Sevigny’s case, to ham it up. Her floor-length flowered chiffon blouson gown was by Yves Saint Laurent.
“That’s Alber Elbaz for YSL,” Sevigny clarified. “It’s so sad that Alber’s leaving, and he’s been so good to me. I wanted to showcase one of his beautiful dresses.”
“American Beauty”‘s Mena Suvari poured herself into the night’s most revealing outfit — a glove-like silver mermaid ensemble by Escada — while her co-star Thora Birch took a turn for the demure and cinched her Versace scarf dress a bit more tightly than Jennifer Lopez did on Grammy night.
Some actresses went for the shock of the old. Inspired by the Francisco Scavullo photos she’d recently discovered, Lara Flynn Boyle funked up her mint-green halter jumpsuit with an Afro. And Portia de Rossi of “The Sopranos” dug out a Roberto Cavalli silk zebra bell-bottom jumpsuit.
Some of Hollywood’s edgier girls played it safe. Hilary Swank wore a girly bow-in-the-back Randolph Duke and sounded a little like Gwyneth Paltrow a year earlier when she said, “I wanted to look sweet tonight.”
Angelina Jolie left her broomstick at home this time. In Versace black chiffon, she looked positively — nice.
“People are being great to me with clothes,” she confessed. “And it’s a good thing, because if it was up to me, I’d wind up wearing sweatpants.”
