RUSSELL AGREES TO BUY HAAS OUTDOORS DIVISION
NEW YORK — Russell Corp. has signed a deal to acquire the apparel division of Haas Outdoors Inc. and plans to create the Mossy Oak Apparel Co.
The agreement includes licensing rights for core apparel under the Mossy Oak brand, which specializes in camouflage clothing for outdoor specialty stores. The deal will give Russell greater access to the outdoor market, a Russell spokeswoman said.
Founded in 1986 and based in West Point, Miss., Haas Outdoors produces women’s apparel under the Mossy Oak label. The company caters to hunters and fishers, as well as bird watchers and photographers.
In addition to hunting apparel, Mossy Oak’s camouflage patterns have been used for accessories and all-terrain vehicles.
Russell, the maker of the Russell Athletic, Jerzees and Cross Creek labels, specializes in activewear, casual wear and athletic uniforms.
“It is part of our overall corporate strategy to build brands and extend product lines, particularly with value-added products,” said Jack Ward, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Russell. “We will now have the ability to build and develop business around Jerzees Outdoors, Trebark and Mossy Oak brands in the growing outdoor market.”
In 1998, Russell entered the outdoor market by introducing licensed camouflage patterns with its Jerzees Outdoor product line. Jerzees will continue to manage the outdoor apparel business, including Haas’s existing licenses for core apparel.
