DUFOUR REPORTED LEAVING BALMAIN
NEW YORK — There were unconfirmed reports Friday night in Paris that Gilles Dufour is leaving Balmain.
Neither the designer nor anyone from Balmain could be reached Friday.
Dufour joined the venerable house in 1998 as artistic director of the diffusion ready-to-wear and licensed products in an effort to attract a younger clientele. He has earned rocky reviews in his three seasons for the house.
Prior to joining Balmain, Dufour worked as artistic director of Chanel’s design studios for 15 years. At Balmain, he succeeded Andrew Gn, who was on board for just a year.
Balmain has three principal women’s lines. Since 1992, the couture collection has been designed by Oscar de la Renta, who also designs the Ivoire luxury ready-to-wear collection.
