PARIS — French department store Galeries Lafayette has taken a 30 percent stake in an upcoming chain called Sport et Nature International for an undisclosed sum.
The first Sport et Nature unit here is slated to open in November, with plans to offer apparel, footwear and other goods targeted to the outdoor lifestyle and sports. It also will have a travel agency offering theme trips.
The founder of Sport et Nature is Gildas Guillerot, a former surfing champion who has some apparel experience. He worked at Cacharel and the men’s and boys’ wear label Celio, according to Galeries marketing and communications director Jean-Michel Girardin. “This is a very small investment, but we feel that the concept is really valid for today,” Girardin said. He explained that Sport et Nature is not going to be a sporting goods retailer, and he likened the concept to a “more urban” version of L.L. Bean. Guillerot could not be reached for comment.
The first Sport et Nature store will measure roughly 11,000 square feet and will open in a new retail center at Bercy, a neighborhood marked by modern government buildings and commercial properties in the 12th arrondissement here.
