NEW YORK — Usually, he’s behind the scenes, putting the designers in front of the cameras at QVC and identifying new merchandise opportunities. But last week, Bob Ayd, star merchant of QVC, took the spotlight at a black-tie gala at the Pierre Hotel, where he was honored by the Fashion Accessories Group of the UJA-Federation.
The big benefit was a rare occasion for assembling the stable of prominent designers who sell their lines on the QVC home shopping cable channel and its Internet site. Among those attending were Mary McFadden, Kenneth Jay Lane, Dennis Basso, Bob Mackie, Frederique, Pauline Trigere, Josie Natori, Louis Dell Olio, Koos van Den Akker, Sharif, Robert Lee Morris and Stan Herman, as well as QVC’s new fashion consultant, Ellin Saltzman, hired just two weeks ago.
The crowd of 300 raised $150,000 for UJA-Federation of New York.
“This is an excellent cause,” said Ayd, who is the home shopping channel’s vice president of apparel, accessories, health and beauty. “The great part is that it is all about helping people less fortunate than ourselves.”
