NEW YORK — John Wilson has been named president of Vestimenta Inc., the North American unit of Italian sportswear firm Vestimenta SpA.
He succeeds Sandy Symkens, who resigned to pursue other interests. Wilson joins Vestimenta from Salvatore Ferragamo, where he was vice president of its men’s division.
Wilson reports to Davide Grasso, Vestimenta’s worldwide general manager, who joined the firm last July from Nike Europe.
Eager to raise its profile and image, especially in the fast-growing American market, the company is beefing up its management ranks, raising its advertising profile and eyeing a rollout of in-store shops in the fast growing “gold range” sportswear tier between bridge and designer.
Although best known for its men’s wear, Vestimenta’s parent plans to develop the women’s division, which last year accounted for about 10 percent of sales.
Founded in the northern Italian town of Trento in 1962, Vestimenta manufactures a men’s line known as Hilton everywhere but in the U.S., where, for trademark reasons, it is sold under the Vestimenta name. In June, the firm plans to unveil a new flagship Milan store during the Italian men’s collections.
