HUG SHOTS: More than 500 members of the intimate apparel industry turned out for the annual HUG Awards cocktail party and black-tie dinner last week at the New York Hilton.
Honored were Hal J. Upbin, president, chairman and chief executive officer of Kellwood Co., and Stephanie George, president of Women’s Wear Daily Media Worldwide. Dr. Matthew H.M. Lee, a Howard A. Rusk Professor and chairman of the Department of Rehabilitation at NYU School of Medicine, received a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Intimate Apparel Square Club hosted the event. Proceeds raised at the dinner will be donated to the $6 million campaign for a new pediatric wing at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine.
Barry Ross, secretary of the IASC, would not estimate how much money was raised, but noted, “It was the second most financially successful event in the 45-year history of the Intimate Apparel Square Club.” The HUG award is an acronym for Help Us Give.
“Wow!” exclaimed Upbin, as he received his award from Vanessa Castagna, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the J.C. Penney Stores’ merchandising and catalog businesses. “She’s the chief operating officer of our biggest customer.”
Lavelle Olexa, senior vice president of fashion merchandising and public relations at Lord & Taylor, presented George with her award. Noting that there were many people she could “have lunch or dinner with” during a working week, Olexa said of George, “I consider her a very good Saturday-night friend.”
Matthew Goldstein, an account executive with Guilford Mills, presented Lee with his award.
UJA AWARDS: The Intimate Apparel Division of UJA-Federation of New York hosted a cocktail reception at The Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan last week honoring two executives and one intimate apparel company. Recipients of the honors were Skip Chustz, senior vice president and general merchandise manager of apparel and product development at ShopKo Stores; Barry Ross, vice president of Sextet Fabrics Inc., and Maidenform Inc.
L. Terry McDonald, ShopKo’s senior vice president of marketing and communications, presented Chustz with his award, Ronald A. Ross presented the award to his son. Maurice Reznik, president of Maidenform, accepted the award from Diane Paccione, vice president and general merchandise manager of Sears, Roebuck & Co.
