ART IN THE STREET
NEW YORK — On May 4, Madison Avenue’s retailers hosted an extremely glorified block party. It was the gala reception for “Where Fashion Meets Art,” a week-long promotion hosted by the Madison Avenue Business Improvement District, where fashion, accessories and home retailers displayed artwork chosen from local galleries.
Strollers from 57th Street to 82nd Street could see Warhol silk screens in the Versace store, Ross Bleckners at Ralph Lauren or a Jennifer Bartlett at Mario Caldi.
“Sex in the City” star Kim Cattrall hung out at Cartier with chairman Simon Critchell, while Nicole Miller hobnobbed at the Sonia Rykiel boutique with the designer’s daughter, Nathalie Rykiel. Sylvie Mousseron of Sonia Rykiel and Randall J. Hemming of Giorgio Armani chaired the event.
Jewelry designers David and Sybil Yurman were using the evening in part to kick off their 20th year in business at the David Yurman boutique. Besides a retrospective of their own works, the Yurmans were showing three paintings by Gregory Gillespie, the late painter whose work is a particular favorite of the couple’s.
