NEW YORK — Kathy Ireland is looking for a little extra green on the fairways.
As the sponsor of the Kathy Ireland Greens.com Classic — which was formerly known as the Hope Myrtle Beach Classic — she is helping to raise money for City of Hope, while giving her signature golfwear some serious play.
The event will be held June 1-4 at the Wachesaw East Golf Club in Murrells Inlet, S.C., and will air on ESPN. Kmart, Ireland’s exclusive licensee, is a sponsor of the tournament.
With the exception of Dinah Shore, Ireland is the only woman to have a LPGA-sponsored tournament named after her.
Reached Wednesday at a photo shoot in Malibu for Kmart, Ireland said she likes that golf is more of an “inclusive” sport than an elitist one. She also said she loves designing golf clothes that go beyond the golf course.
“Having a daughter makes this even more important to me. I want her to know there are real opportunities and possibilities for her,” Ireland said. “The LPGA is such a good example. It’s important to know what’s out there.”
During next month’s event, some pros will compete wearing Ireland’s signature golfwear and socks. Models will also sport the brand in the hospitality tent, a spokesman for Ireland said. There will also be product giveaways.
While in South Carolina, Ireland will oversee the shoot for a 2001 Kathy Ireland swimsuit calendar — the first edition in a couple of years. She will appear on the cover, but “women of all shapes and sizes” will be featured throughout the calendar, according to a spokesman.
The models will also take to a float to showcase the brand at the Sun Fun Festival, an annual parade that will be held in Myrtle Beach during the tournament.
