NEW YORK — Saks Inc. has appointed Max Jones senior vice president and general merchandise manager of the Proffitt’s/McRae’s store group with responsibility for cosmetics and men’s wear.
Jones was president and chief executive of Saks’ Herberger’s group in St. Cloud, Minn. Herberger’s is being merged into the Carson Pirie Scott unit, based in Milwaukee, and McRae’s, now based in Jackson, Miss., is being fit into Proffitt’s operations in Knoxville, Tenn. Jones is expected to assume his new post when the consolidation is complete, probably by September.
Jones will work out of the Proffitt’s headquarters in Knoxville, his hometown, and report to Toni Browning, president and chief executive of Proffitt’s.
A veteran of May Department Stores’ Robinson’s-May unit and of Allied Stores, Jones joined Proffitt’s in 1994 as a divisional merchandise manager. He was promoted to vice president and general merchandise manager of men’s, shoes, children’s, intimate apparel and home before moving to Herberger’s in 1997.
A spokeswoman for Saks said that because of consolidation of the two units, the position is a new one. More executive assignments will be made in the coming months, she said.
Saks operates 350 stores, 61 of them under the Proffitt’s and McRae’s nameplates in the Southeast.
