NEW YORK — Daniel B. Brewster Jr., president and chief executive officer of American Express Publishing, has been named president and chief executive officer of Gruner + Jahr USA Publishing, whose titles include YM, McCall’s Fitness, Parents and Family Circle.
He succeeds John Heins, who resigned in February to become executive vice president of international sales and operations at Netscape.
“This is an irresistible opportunity to build the U.S. magazine business for one of the world’s largest media companies,” said Brewster. “Gruner + Jahr and the parent company, Bertelsmann, have the resources to substantially increase their presence in this market and their management has made the commitment to do so.”
He reports to Axel Ganz, president of the International Magazine Division for Gruner + Jahr.
Brewster, 44, joined American Express Publishing in 1993 and was the driving force behind the success of the company’s luxury lifestyle magazines — Travel & Leisure, Departures, Food & Wine and T&L Golf — as well as books, directories and Web sites. Brewster’s successor at American Express Publishing hasn’t been named yet.
