CHASING CUSTOMERS WITH SKIRT
Byline: Kerry Diamond
NEW YORK — Skirt, a flirty new fragrance collection launching this fall, is a tribute to the current mood in fashion.
“There is a definite movement toward pretty items in clothing and accessories,” said Kathleen Croddick Molyneaux, president and chief executive officer of Fashion Fragrances & Cosmetics. “I thought it would be exciting to take the names of patterns and make fragrances from them.”
The result is three scents: Plaid, Pin Stripe and Polka Dot. The three stockkeeping units for each fragrance include a 3.4-oz. spray mist that will retail for $15, a 6-oz. body lotion for $12, and a 6-oz. shower gel for $11. The cartons and bottles match the particular pattern and feature illustrations by Chesley McLaren.
The product line will launch in September with Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Eve.com. According to industry sources, Skirt will do $1 million at retail in the first year.
Skirt is a definite departure for Molyneaux, whose two companies — she is also president of Irving Rice — specialize in high-end products with a cult audience, like Rigaud candles and Fracas.
“I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to do a line for specialty stores that had outstanding packaging and great fragrances, but that was more fun and playful and moderately priced,”‘ she said. “You can buy three products at once and it’s not a huge investment.”
