ALFRED SHERK NAMED CEO AT FTADIRECT
NEW YORK — FTADirect.com, a developing business-to-business e-commerce Web site headed up by former Cotton Incorporated chief executive officer Nick Hahn, on Monday named Alfred Sherk to the ceo post.
Sherk is the founder of e-Chemicals, a B2B site which began serving the chemical industry in 1998. He joined FTADirect.com in June when the company acquired FiberMatch, a textile-industry Web exchange he had developed. Until Monday, he did not have a formal title at FTADirect, according to Devon Archer, head of business development.
Prior to founding e-Chemicals, Sherk spent 16 years working in sales and marketing positions at the Dow Chemical Co.
Referring to Sherk’s work at e-Chemicals, Archer said, “He has built this revolutionary B2B technology and taken it across an industry that was extremely fragmented. He brings a core aptitude of how this can work in the apparel industry. He sees this as a natural step for me.”
FTADirect plans to serve as an on-line exchange for buyers and sellers of fibers, textiles and finished apparel. It expects to host its first transaction by the end of the month, according to Archer.
The company, with Hahn as chairman, also has an advisory board of current and former apparel executives. Among them are Allen Questrom, chairman and ceo of Barneys; Larry Pugh, former chairman and ceo of VF Corp., and Pat Danahy, former chairman and ceo of Cone Mills Corp. It currently has 18 full-time employees.
