NEW YORK — Michael Skidmore, longtime senior merchant for Barneys New York and the former director of global merchandising for troubled e-tailer, has been named vice president general merchandise manager of retail merchandising for the planned Hugo Boss New York flagship.
The 23,000-square-foot Hugo Boss store, at Fifth Avenue and 56th Street, is expected to open by March 2001. Skidmore will report to Marty Staff, president and chief executive officer of Hugo Boss USA.
“He’s the best selector of merchandise I’ve ever worked with,” said Staff. “In an era when buyers are accountants, it’s so refreshing to work with a buyer who has great taste. Anyone who was trained by Fred Pressman will succeed
in retail.”
Since exiting in March, when the company reorganized, Skidmore has been executive vice president of, which serves the fashion industry with enhanced softwear technology.
Skidmore said part of the reason he joined the company was Staff.
“Hugo Boss was a sleeping giant and through his understanding of the nature of the industry, he’s restructured and re-shaped the company so it can move to the next level,” Skidmore said.
Prior to his stint at, Skidmore spent 24 years at Barneys, attaining the position of senior vice president.
