TORONTO — In only its second season, the Fashion Design Council of Canada is still testing its wings. During its recent fashion week, there were a few strong designers, and even fewer who had formal presentations. Most shows were no more than racks of clothing, with maybe a model or two, in meeting rooms at the Windsor Arms Hotel. Some got the location right, though, choosing quirkier runway sites — an old church in a rundown section of the city or the sidewalk outside the famous Data Shoe Museum. But venue aside, there was news from three designers, including Wayne Box’s asymmetric knits and little slipdresses with beaded straps; Ula Zukowska’s inventive long rain dresses and drawstring tunics with bold geometrics over rain pants and Leibovitz & Co.’s sexy silk sportswear. Also memorable were Khurana’s charming lingerie or floral-print cropped pants; Domini DeSentino’s chartreuse and fuchsia dress; Rhonda B’s hand-dyed cotton crochet looks and the pretty lace-edged floral knit dress from Damzels in This Dress. Here, a roundup.
