BELK’S TAPS DAVID HINES
NEW YORK — David Hines will join Belk’s northern division in Raleigh, N.C., as president, effective Nov. 6.
He will succeed Karl G. Hudson 3rd, who, as reported, is leaving the post Nov. 4 after 22 years in retailing.
Hines comes to Belk from May Department Stores Co.
He has been with the Washington, D.C.-based Hecht Co. division for 15 years, most recently as senior vice president and general merchandise manager. Prior to that he was divisional vice president and divisional merchandise manager of May’s G. Fox division, which now operates as part of the Filene’s unit. He began his career with the Bamberger’s division of R.H. Macy & Co. in 1971.
Hines will be responsible for merchandising and sales promotion. Robert Greiner was earlier named chairman of the northern division.
Over the past few years, Belk has consolidated from over 100 family-owned stores, including Raleigh-based Hudson Belk, into 13 regional divisions and more recently into four regional units. Hudson’s grandfather started Hudson Belk in downtown Raleigh in 1915. Hudson succeeded his father, Karl Hudson Jr., as the store’s president in 1990.
