NEW YORK — Joseph Boitano, Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises’ senior vice president and general merchandise manager for couture and designer ready-to-wear, has been given additional responsibilities running the company’s emerging home business. Officials described the home category as “the number-one growth initiative at Saks Fifth Avenue.”

“This is going to keep me very busy,” Boitano said Wednesday. “Home has the most opportunity, particularly in our flagships, and in terms of classifications, in gifts, gourmet and food components and the bridal registry.”

Boitano said Saks started to concentrate on building its home business three years ago. Home products are currently sold in 52 of Saks’ 61 doors. Last fall, home shop expansions were completed in the Fifth Avenue flagship, Chicago and Tyson’s Corner units. This year, home shops are going into the Houston, Beverly Hills, and Las Vegas stores. An automated gift registry program will be piloted in the flagship this fall.

Boitano is considered a top merchant with an eye for sophisticated products. “I know that he will lead this team to create a unique home area that will set Saks apart from our competition,” said Christina Johnson, president and chief executive of Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises, in a statement.

Reporting to Boitano on the home side will be two vice presidents, Laura Belvedere, divisional merchandise manager, and Corky Tyler, creative director. Boitano continues to report to Gail Pisano, executive vice president of merchandising.
